World Environment Day falls on 5 June every year. And while most sustainability conversations focus on transport, packaging and energy, one of the most impactful choices any individual can make is far simpler — switching from dairy protein to plant protein.
The Numbers
Producing one kilogram of whey protein concentrate requires approximately 35 litres of milk. That milk requires land for grazing or feed crops, water for the animals and processing, and generates significant greenhouse gas emissions — predominantly methane from cattle and nitrous oxide from feed production.
Plant protein — particularly brown rice protein — requires a fraction of the land, water and energy inputs. Research published in Science found that producing plant protein generates up to 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than dairy protein per gram of protein delivered.
What's Good for Your Gut is Good for the Planet
The environmental case and the gut health case for plant protein align perfectly. Brown rice protein is naturally low FODMAP, well tolerated by sensitive guts, and produced with a fraction of the environmental footprint of whey or casein.
At That Protein we source organic ingredients specifically because organic farming practices build soil health, support biodiversity and reduce synthetic chemical inputs — all of which contribute to a healthier planet alongside a healthier gut.
Our Packaging Commitment
We design our packaging to minimise waste because we believe our responsibility doesn't end with what's inside the bag. Plastic Free July — starting 1 July — is a reminder that every choice matters.
Small Choices, Real Impact
You do not need to overhaul your entire life to make a difference. Swapping one dairy protein shake per day for a plant-based certified Low FODMAP alternative is a genuinely meaningful environmental choice — and it is better for your gut at the same time.
